Creating Space for Creativity at Home for Kids (Without Overcomplicating It)
I think sometimes we imagine that creating space for creativity at home needs to be… a whole setup.
A perfect corner.
Beautiful materials.
Time set aside.
But I’ve found it’s often much simpler than that.
For me, it started with a cart.
Nothing fancy.
Just a place where I could keep materials together… and within reach.
I still limit what’s available.
Not everything is out all the time.
But there’s enough.
And honestly… the way this cart changed things in our house was kind of crazy.
Before, creating needed to be set up.
Now, it just… happens.
They go to the cart.
Pick something.
Start.
No big moment.
No plan.
So many quiet moments in the mornings and evenings are now spent creating.
Making creativity easy to access at home
I think that’s the biggest shift.
Making things accessible.
Not hidden away in cupboards.
Not something that needs permission every time.
Just there.
It doesn’t mean there are no limits.
There are still rules around mess.
Materials that need help or supervision.
But within that… there’s freedom.
And that balance matters.
How creative spaces change as kids grow
It’s also something that changes as kids grow.
Right now, with my kids being 4 and 5, our craft cart looks like:
Paper in different colours.
Cardboard.
Scissors.
Markers.
Pens.
Pencils.
Glue.
Hot glue (with help).
Toilet paper rolls.
Egg cartons.
Simple things.
Right now, they’re drawn to
drawing, cutting, sticking, building, combining things.
It’s very physical.
Very hands-on.
Later, it might look different.
More detail.
More intention.
Different materials.
So the space has to shift too.
Not become bigger or better…
just different.
I think that’s important to remember.
There isn’t one perfect setup.
It’s something you adjust as they grow.
As their interests change.
As their way of creating changes.
You don’t need a perfect setup
And it doesn’t have to be a whole room.
It can be a shelf.
A box.
A cart like mine.
Just something that says:
“You can start here.”
That’s really what I’m trying to create at home…
and what I’m thinking about as I build Messy Magic House.
Not a perfect space.
But an accessible one.
Messy Magic House is a creative space I’m slowly building in the Porto / Matosinhos area.
This blog is where I share the thinking behind it… as it’s taking shape.
